If you are like most people, you are stuck before you even start. You don’t know how to get going and are probably looking all over the place unable to make a decision.
Maybe you’ve already tried to teach yourself some chords or songs using free online content, but if the truth be told you can’t play nearly as well as you’d like. You are uncertain whether you are doing it right or wrong, progress is very slow and actually you are becoming frustrated and starting to doubt your own abilities. For the VAST majority of beginners contacting us, this is what has happened, and for some people its taken them 25 years or more, before deciding enough is enough and to call us so we can help fix it!!
Why can’t most people get very far teaching themselves?
Ever heard that expression: “You don’t know what you don’t know?” Well, as a beginner guitarist do you see how this relates to you? And let’s face it, the amount of information on the internet can be overwhelming, with different sources often contradicting each other. So try as you might, you are highly unlikely to be learning things in the right order which is essential to your success. People often start with songs and chords that are far too difficult. Same for strumming patterns, fingerstyle or anything else you want to play on guitar. Maybe you’ve experienced this yourself?
If you have, you’ll know it’s really frustrating to learn like this! After multiple attempts to play whatever song or technique you randomly came across, you feel like giving up because it sounds nothing like it should.
When I started learning guitar 20-odd years ago, there was no internet. So I spent 6 weeks trying to figure out how to play Castles Made of Sand by Jimi Hendrix by listening to a cassette tape. The problems I had back then were similar to those experienced now in the internet era. At the end of the 6 weeks, I realised I had been wasting my time – it sounded awful because almost all of what I was doing was too hard for a beginner. Luckily I didn’t give up, I found a great teacher who taught me how to play songs more suitable for my level. And by the time I was ready to learn Castles Made of Sand, it was easy.
Whilst its tempting to try and teach yourself, in reality a LOT of time and energy gets wasted and bad habits are picked up, which are hard to undo.
You can avoid wasting time and energy simply by finding a great teacher straight away. When you think about it, so much of what we do in life every day is possible because someone taught us – from reading and writing to the sports we play, from swimming to driving. We are always glad when people realise they do need a teacher in order to learn guitar the right way and then contact us for help.
Sometimes people come to us worried they won’t be able to play guitar very well because they know of someone who “picked up the guitar like a natural and can play anything by ear”. What you often don’t know is those people enjoy guitar so much they have played for hours and hours, which is WHY they appear to be naturals. If you were to ask any of Ireland’s best performing guitarists how they got so good on guitar, they will tell you the main reason is because of the amount of playing and practicing they have done. We believe that: 1) if you attend a guitar school with great teachers and a fantastic atmosphere; 2) if you are surrounded by other enthusiastic students, and 3) if you get in plenty of playing; you ARE going to be like so many of our students, who start out as ordinary beginners and become excellent guitarists.

The Story of Ultimate School of Music
Ultimate School of Music was founded by Dublin musician Daniel Jacobson. Daniel has been playing guitar for 25 years and teaching for over 20 years. His teaching career started with teaching classmates in high school, and he went on to teach at several music schools in Ireland and New Zealand, including on the Jazz Degree course at Newpark Music Centre. He has tried and tested many different teaching methods during this time. In 2013 he founded Ultimate School of Music with the aim of creating the best guitar school in Ireland. Since then the school has grown year after year with more and more students hearing about us. They seek us out so they too can get great results in their playing, from our unique teaching methods and great ‘can-do, will-do’ atmosphere.
What you get at Ultimate School of Music compared to other schools:
This school helped me a lot! I hadn’t been playing the guitar much, just every now and then. But I didn’t have the motivation to push myself, because I wasn’t clear on what the goals were. I wasn’t sure if I could do it… That’s something I hear often from my friends around me who were trying to play the guitar.
I definitely would recommend them to come here to give it a try. You’ll see that if he can do it, and he can do it, and HE can do it – then YOU must be able to do it too! There’s a way and you just work a little bit every day and one day [at a time] you are getting better and that’s how you reach your goals and that’s how you prove yourself.– Ziyi Wang
If you have normal functioning fingers and can read and write – YOU ARE GOOD ENOUGH! Even if you tried before and gave up that doesn’t mean you won’t succeed on your next try. And once you take the first few steps, we’ll guide you onto the next steps, and like that you will learn to play the guitar before you know it. When you think about it, most of our life is going to be spent either studying, working or rearing families so if we waited for all of that to be done before we picked up a new hobby, we would be waiting a long, long time. Also, it could be that you have more time than you realise, if you are spending a lot of it on passive entertainment – think laptops, tablets and phones. Very often when we say “I don’t have time”, we do, but we don’t want to make the time. If you want to learn guitar, then just make it a priority and do it. Playing music brings SO MUCH joy, satisfaction and fulfilment to all of our students most of whom are very busy people. Here at Ultimate School of Music we respect your time, so we make sure our teaching methods are extremely effective. Everything we teach you is what YOU need to learn; and that is why your guitar playing will progress from the minute you start with us.

No you aren’t! If you are fit and healthy then you will be like many of our students even into their 60s and 70s, some of whom had never played any musical instruments before. And when they join our school some will surpass the progress of our younger students because they might be retired and have extra time to play a bit more! In our experience every student progresses at a different speed and age is the LEAST important factor.
All work and no play… is not good for you! If you love listening to music, love going to gigs, and you love the thought of being able to play the guitar, then read answer to 2) above. Our programme is designed to give everyone the most effective results for their time. And it really is more simple than you think to get a few minutes of extra playing in between classes. How about during lunch break? Or spending time playing before you leave work to avoid peak hour traffic? Just a few minutes of extra playing IS possible for most people. Still not sure?
